World Mental Health Day, observed annually on 10th October, is an occasion to focus on mental health and wellbeing. This year’s theme, set by the World Federation of Mental Health, is workplace mental health. This theme underscores the significance of addressing mental health in workplace environments, benefiting individuals, organisations, and communities alike.
Work can greatly affect our mental health; it can be beneficial by providing purpose, enhancing self-esteem, and facilitating social connections. However, it can also be a source of stress and anxiety, potentially leading to or exacerbating mental health issues. Given that many individuals spend a substantial amount of time at work, it is imperative that workplaces support mental health, maximising the benefits while minimising the negative impacts.
At Asbestech, we are committed to fostering a mentally healthy workplace. Initiatives such as offering mental health training to our staff and having trained Mental Health First Aiders on hand promote open dialogue about mental health. While discussing mental health in the workplace is becoming more prevalent, initiating such conversations can still be challenging. If you or someone you know is experiencing mental health difficulties, remember you are not alone, and there is support available. Our trained Mental Health First Aiders are always ready to offer assistance to any team member.
Additionally, the Lighthouse Construction Charity provides crucial support to construction workers and their families.
